Trinh Cam Nhi is a Vietnamese painter based in Hanoi. Exploring the intricate world of botanical forms as the manifestation of different states of being, Nhi looks at painting as the never-ending circle of give and take. Catching invisible forces that pass through her: through painting Nhi recognizes herself and her place in the world. Trinh Cam Nhi’s early works (Garden of Unknowing, Casa Italia, Hanoi, 2020) feature dynamic depictions of flowers and female figures that merge and transform into one another. Drawing from her adolescent experiences and five years of studying painting in Italy, flowers appear distorted and alienated, beaming with a sense of unknown sexuality.
Gravitating toward abstraction, her imagery embodies a femininity that is both mysterious and innocent. Between 2021 and 2024, she adopted the grid composition to create multi-focal, non-linear spatial registers. By interweaving fragments of landscapes, botanical motifs and the body, painting becomes less of a site of representation than a space of inward projection. The works created during this period were shown in the two-person exhibition Fragments of Soul with sculptress Lap Phuong (Centec Tower, Ho Chi Minh City, 2023). In 2024 she joined the Vietnam Art Collection Residency (VAC) and presented her second solo exhibition White Night, exploring water-based media on Dzo paper. In 2025, Nhi initiated Frozen Sad Letter, a painting project exploring the boundary between the spoken and the silent. Merging written words with organic forms into surreal, sculptural structures, the series further expands her abstract vision.
